Coached his firt Pole Vaulter in 1958 Paul Dove, shortly after he moved to Dr. Challoner's Grammar School , England. He was assigned field events where he taught each boy to Pole Vault on 8 ft wooden staves. It was here that Steve Chappell learned to Pole Vault and started his way to his present position as Managing Director of UCS Spirit. After 10 years of Coaching in England Alan moved to the U.S. to Western Kentucky to earn a Masters Degree and coach the field events. In 1973 Coach Launder left for the University of South Austraila as a Throws Coach. It was here that I saw that there had not been a vaulter over 13 feet in the last five years. To learn more about the Vault I visited England, Germany, France and Poland. I worked with Maurice Houvion for two weeks in Vincennes, France. Andrzei Krzesinski in Warsaw, Poland for two weeks and Krupski in Germany two weeks.

My great change in thinking came when I met Vitali Petrov. Tommy Jumped 18' 8 1/4 for the win. Becca Gillispy inteviews Tommy after the win and gives details of how the competition went. Opened at 5.5 (18' 0 1/2). When the bar was at 5.85 (19' 2 1/2) Tommy started with a pole flexed at 11.6 and finished with a flex of 12.0. Tommy tells Becca that he plans to stay in school and graduate in two years. The interview then goes on to how it feels to win second outdoor title. Photo taken from American Track & Field Athlete.

Mike Landers of UCLA placed 3rd with a jump of 18'0 1/2" new double PR. Mike was able to get on a bigger pole and jumping with the advice of Coach Tony (Anthony Curran).

Brian Mondschein tells how his warm-ups were ugly running through 5 of 6 times. When the competition started he got his adrenaline going and went up poles and made ajustments as the meet when on. Brian cleared all his jumps until he got to 5.50 (18'0 1/2"). Winds were not to bad, you could catch a break if you stayed patient. Advice to young vaulters, just keep at it. Alot of hard work will pay off in the end.

Music found at the end of the podcast is from the Podsafe Music Network. After watching the meet Bubba was in his garage looking for sticks he could use to practice with.

In High School Bubba vaulted at Waltrip & Scarborough High Schools and jumped 14'6. Athlete he remembers looking up to was Dave Roberts from Conroe High School TX, and trained at Rice University. (1976 World Record Holder 5.70 18' 81/4").

Beginning equipment: 2 poles 16' 190 & (12' 130 thermaflex) learned how to swing from the smaller pole.

Bubba attended Soutwest Texas State University on a partial Pole Vault Scholarship and jumped 15' 2 1/2" Freshman year. Bubba watched STEVE HARDISON win the NAIA National Outdoor Championship 16' 625". which was the motivation to get better for the upcoming seasons. Bubba went on to win the 1975 & 1976 NAIA Pole Vault Outdoor Championships. Bubba's PR in college was 5.20 17' 0.75" at the same meet Earl Bell set the World Record in Wichita 5.67 18.7.25

After a 10 year absence from vaulting Bubba met up with Coach Vince O'Boyle at UC Irvine to help coach college vaulters and have a place to train for 14 years.

Bubba was asked by Bruce Caldwell to assist as a Pole Vault technician for the Olympic Games in Atlanta where he spent five weeks working with athletes from around the world as they prepared for the Olympics. In 1997 Bubba won the Boston Indoor Nationals competed in Master's Championships in South Africa placing 3rd.

In 2005 Bubba competed in the National Masters Meet in Honolulu, Hawaii. Bubba palced 3rd in event 765 M50 Pole Vault (3.50 meters 11' 575") Bubba is also helping the Pole Vaulters at The Woodlands High School, Texas.

Links discussed by Bubba in our interview.

Bubbapv.com Bubba's Web Page

http://www.aptc.biz/PT%20at%20Home/ Bubba's PT at Home

http://www.howardgrubb.co.uk/athletics/wavalookup.html Age grading calculator.

PVW - #0013 Pole Vault Superstitions

Pole Vault Superstitions is under construction and will be added when complete

PVW - #0012 Indy State Fair

Denise Howell - Appellate and Intellectual Property Lawyer Interview.

Adam Cury & Ron Bloom - CBS Marketwatch Interview.

Walt Mossberg - With the Wall Street Journal on the Podcast411 Interview.

Becca Gilespy with polevaultpower.com interviews the following Vaulters.

Lon Badeaux - Arkansaw State University Jumps and Multi Coach. August 5, 2005. This is Bob Duckworth with PoleVaultWorld.com Today I asked many of our High School CC Runners if they new what Podcasting was and most did not have a clue. So I think I need to repeat myself on the topic for first time listeners. Podcasts can be downloaded and Subscribe for free at itunes, or podcastalley.com and at many other sites.

B. How did I first get in to Podcasting? Well, I grew up in the Denver Colorado area and often times I go to the Denverpost.com webpage for Colorado News. On that site I saw a Podcast logo and read up on how I could download their Podcast. The process was pretty easy and before I new it I was driving to Cross Country Practice listening to Colorado News. During that days run with the team I could not stop thinking about how cool that was. When I came back home I researched further and found that you could download other Podcasts from itunes for free. So I gave it a try, and soon I was listening to podcasts from amateurs like myself.

C. I feel like I just found an old microphone and went out in the backyard and just started talking about stuff. Much like Rick Baggett said beginning vaulters should do with an old Pole Vault Pole, In Becca's interview with Rick Bagget on episode 9. As I continue to learn how to use this microphone, I hope to bring the sound quality to a better level. With time I will move to better equipment and keep improving like we expect our vaulters to do.

D. Now its time to turn it over to Becca Gillespy with polevaultpower.com interviews Steve Chappell with UCS Spirit, in Carson City Nevada. at the UCS Spirit pole plant.

B. Becca asks how did you get started making poles. "long answer to that, I was a Pole Vaulter in England and my coach was in correspondence with George Moore of American Athletics. George brought his family to Munich Germany in 1972 for the Olympics, It was at that time he met George's daughter Debbie. Two years later Debbie came to England with a friend in 1974 and our friendship blossomed and I came to America and we got married.

C. I began working at Pacer American in Carson City, Nevada. I was working on the pacer III vaulting pole. Things evolved and developed and after George past away from a serious cancer I moved up in the company. In 1986 Pacer was sold.

D. In 1987 we formed UCS Spirit, Jim Wagnor, Lane Maestretti, and myself under the wing of UCS.

E. Becca asks what success has Spirit poles had. 1st Doug Fraley(son of Bob Fraley) Jumped with our poles at the NCAA Championships 1987. He needed a pole, one of his poles was damaged and he needed a replacement. Lane drove it down to Baton Rouge and Doug won the meet. This was one of our most cherished moments because we new the pole had met the stress of competition.

F. Relationship with Sergei Bubka continued from his use of the AMF Pacer. Sergei in fact did set a new world record in 1988 using the new Spirit Pole. Sergei began a whole string of records which took him over 20 feet, over 6 meters 40 times. Sergei record still stands today at 6.13 meters or 20'125" . Following Doug Fraley from the Fresno area was Melissa Price who took woman's pole vaulting to new levels and set many American Records. She jumped 13'0" after graduating from high school and show that woman vaulters are for real. Stacy Dagila continued that string of American Records, that turned into World Records, and Olympic Gold. Now the event realy is a global sport for woman and 5 meters has been broken.

G. Its been 20 years since Sergei Bubka jumped the majical 6.0 meters on July 13, 1985, and here July 22, 2005 the woman 5.0 meters was set. Thats a very special feeling to be connected to those two majical marks. We hope it will continute, will see. Hopefully, we will do a little bit better with the weather, and we won't get delayed and disrupted. We would like to focus on a Clinic and the Competition. We really feel

H. Becca asks - you all put on the National Pole Vault Summit every year, what are some of the things we can expect at the 2006 Summit.

PVW-#0009 Rick Baggett Interview

Rick Baggett Interview http://www.willamettestriders.com/ Click on hyperlink to see Coach Baggett's site.

A. In Becca's interview you can hear poles hitting the back of the box during the interview.

F. Becca's in the Harry Weber indoor facility in Oregon City, Or. Becca is interveiwing the founder and director of the Willamette Striders Track Club. Coach Bagget was the High School Coach of Tommy Skipper 18'3" , Sarah Need help with spelling 13'0 footer in High School, Beckey Holliday 14' 4" as a Jr. College athlete. Coach Baggett talks about how to begin a club.

G. Coach Baggett gives the size of Harry Weber indoor facility at 60 feet wide and 200 feet long along with other details for training track & field athletes. Coach Baggett has 225 pole in the facility.

H. Coach Bagget is the chairman for the Northwest Region Pole Vault Development. As Chairman he runs the Northwest Polevault Festival in February, its kind of like the Pole Vault Summit. but for local High School coaches and athletes. Gymnastics coaches come in and help out with body positioning. Also puts on the Northwest Regional Championships with two Beach Vaults running 10 and 11 years. Also check out the Freedom Fair

I. Becca asks Coach Baggett what is going well for Pole Vault Development. Pole Vault is far ahead of other events. From safety issues to Coaches education program. We need to start to put together a standardized Pole Vault Curriculum for Schools to work from. We need to create a standarized development much like gymnastics has. Rick suggests more work on conditioning and speed development.

J. USOC has pulled the funding and put it on a as needed basis. Organizors would take $8,000 to take athletes and them selves to Europe, This did not help the development community. Becca asks where should we spend money. Coach Baggett suggests building 100 facilitys like the Harry Weber at every metro area in the U.S. = 25 Million.

K. Becca asks what advice do you have for beginning vaulters. Rick suggests get and old pole and go jump over stuff in the back yard. As soon as you start getting 8 or 9 feet and it starts to hurt, you need to go find a pole vault pit.

L. Becca asks how do you suggest kids learn more about pole vaulting. Rick says "investigate", get on the internet and ask around.

M. If you got my closing in a Duck kind of voice, I did not do that on purpose. The first real PoleVaultWorld Blooper is here. I heard it on my itunes download, not the other sites.

L. Music at the end is the song Rollin by Regan. Created using Audiocast

B. Hi I am new to radiodaddy and podcasting. I am a Pole Vault Coach and would like to provide Pole Vaulters with podcast style news and information. My script for the intro would go like this.1. Your listening to Polevaultworld. Topics here will take you high above the bar with actual pole vaulters and techniques that got them there.2. Return often for interviews with the Stars and Coaches who have success stories to share.Any good sound effect would be welcome!!!Raise the Bar with your voice overOakduck. midimuso at radiodaddy did the PoleVaultWorld voice over.

C. Fellow Pole Vault enthusists, This is a beta podcast to see if there is a big enough interest to set up a pole vault podcast site. I have recently purchased an ipod and have been learning its capabilities. After a couple of weeks of fumbling around I came across itunes podcasts. Podcasting is a method of publishing files via the Internet, allowing users to subscribe to a feed to receive new files automatically. It became popular in late 2004, largely for downloading audio files onto a portable audio player or personal computer. What you are listening to now is a podcast. I am in no way an experienced computer geek or broadcaster, but I was able to create this podcast with realitive ease and very little expense. After installing and listening to some of itunes podcasts I began to realize that podcasting maybe an excellent way for Pole Vaulters to pass on success stories, techniques and interviews. As we all know Track & Field and Pole Vaulting get very little main stream news coverage and it is very hard to get good coverage. Becca at polevaultpower.com has done such a great job with her message board. News and information pole vaulters receives there is just awsome. I can only hope that Becca will be a strong supporter and part of trying to create a pole vault podcast . I am willing to get a podcast for pole vaulters started if the interest is here. I in no way want to be the only one who conducts interviews or feel I have the ability to do a good job at it. However, I think with help we could have many people interviewing Pole Vaulters and sending those interviews by wav or mp3 format to me. I would then mix the interviews with a new podcast in production. Let me know what you think.
